FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Further information, Don McKendry, director, John and Annie Glenn Historic Site and Exploration Center, 740-826-3305 John and Annie Glenn Historic Site volunteer receives special recognition NEW CONCORD, OHIO – The John and Annie Glenn Historic Site has begun selling blue star flags to commemorate those families who have members in the armed services and they began this endeavor with a special commemoration. Joan Stewart of Cumberland, Ohio has volunteered at the Glenn site since it opened last year, but her other significant distinction is that she is the only member of the volunteer staff who has a son/daughter in the armed service. As a result, the Glenn site’s staff presented her with a blue star flag of her own. “I was very honored and surprised,” Stewart said. “I remember these flags at my grandmother’s house during World War II, so it brought back a lot of memories.” Stewart’s son is a staff sergeant and crew chief on a gun crew with the United States Army. She just found out that he is on his way to serve as part of the war with Iraq but, she explained, “He couldn’t tell me very much and we’re not at all sure when we’ll hear from him again.” Don McKendry, director of the Glenn site, explained that, “Since Joan is the only volunteer we have with a son/daughter in the service, we thought it would be a nice and appropriate thing to do to present her with one of the flags.” The flags are for sale at the site’s gift shop for $9.50 plus tax. McKendry went on to explain that the flags are appropriate for any family who has anyone in the service, not just the families of those serving in Iraq. The John and Annie Glenn Historic Site is located on Main Street in downtown New Concord. Operating hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. and other times by appointment.
